Nightmares are places where spirits are toyed with, tortured, and mangled.

The spirits are broken into an infinite number of pieces before being sent back home alive, like when a child is bullied at school, and no one knows about it until it is too late.

Sometimes, I wake up from my sleep to voices and sounds, as if an exorcism is being performed right inside my home, only to find that the monstrous voice is coming from me.

It’s horrifying, and as a single woman in her mid-30s, it makes it hard to imagine anyone ever lying next to me at night for the rest of our lives.

Sometimes, I wake up drenched in sweat — a sweat with its own nasty and distinct smell.

This is why I sleep with the fan on at night — not for the white noise.

And I apologize to my sister when she stays overnight because she hates it, the fan, that is. The only good thing about the sweat is that you can’t skip out on a shower.

If you battle with depression, you totally know where I’m coming from.
